BSPB Celebrated Natura 2000 Day in Persina Nature Park
A team from the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) celebrated Natura 2000 Day by participating in the major international event “Danube Wild Islands,” organized by the Directorate of Persina Nature Park. Hundreds of children and their companions, along with many visitors and tourists, passed through BSPB’s informational booth, where they had the opportunity to learn about the Natura 2000 ecological network and some emblematic species such as the Saker Falcon and the European Ground Squirrel.

At the colorful event, BSPB hosted a workshop for crafting “flying birds,” which delighted the young attendees. We also organized birdwatching groups and had the pleasure of showing them some of the region’s beautiful inhabitants, including Glossy Ibises, herons, terns, and bee-eaters.

Every year on May 21, Natura 2000 Day is celebrated. The network protects over 30% of Bulgaria’s territory and is fundamental for the conservation of many plant and animal species. The Birds Directive was adopted in 1979, followed by the Habitats Directive in 1992, forming the legal foundation of the protected areas network.

Over the years, Natura 2000 has proven its importance for the preservation of Bulgarian nature, thanks to the efforts of numerous ecologists, citizens, and organizations.
