Green Balkans team, part of the project Life for Falcon together with representatives of the hunting party of Kolarovo village released 14 mallards in the vicinity of Zemlen village.
Their release is related with the activities within the project and it’s a sing of hope and collaboration between the hunters and the envrionmentalists in protecting of the rich biodiversity and the target habitat for reintroduction of the Saker falcon.
The released young birds are bred by the resident mallards in the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Center in Stara Zagora, which could not be released for different reasons (some of them have been confiscated after having been used as baits during hunting).
Part of the positive results from the meeting was the new information we’ve received from Kolio Kolev from the hunting group in Kolarovo village about a new souslik colony near the place of the release.
European souslik is part of the main menu not only of the Saker falcon but also for many other vultures, and so we are planning a monitoring in the are for observing the stability of the souslik colony in regard to other threats to the species.
